Study with Quizlet and memorize flashcards containing terms like Louise Erdrich, other novels, St. Despite her elegant story and luminous prose, many of the characters feel sketchy compared to Erdrich's previous titans, and several redemptions seem too pat. Gracefully weaving many threads, Erdrich details the multigenerational history surrounding the drum. The drum is revived, as are those around it. Under its spell, she secrets it away and eventually repatriates it to that reservation on the northern plains-the home of her grandmother. Native American antiquities specialist Faye Travers, bereaved of her sister and father, ambivalently in love with a sculptor who has lost his wife and loses his daughter, stumbles onto a ceremonial drum when she handles the estate of John Jewett Tatro, whose grandfather was an agent at the Ojibwe reservation. Erdrich essays the grief that comes when the sins of parents become mortal for their children. So going into my review of “The Ten Thousand Doors of January”, you need to take all of this with a grain of salt. We’re back to a familiar statement from me during a Book Club post and discussion: I am not really a fantasy reader outside of a few specific exceptions, be it titles (“The Lord of the Rings” “The Neverending Story”) or sub-genres (dark fantasy). ![]() Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own. ![]() A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Yet unlike the first book, it was slow-paced and downright hectic. Overall, Shadowsong nicely tied up loose ends. I would really have liked to see more of the Goblin King in the book because there really wasn't that much, but I do understand it was more about Lisel and being able to fix what she broke when she was released from the underground. At one point I completely forgot about The Hunt, which was supposedly hunting Leisl down, and supposedly a constant risk, but never really seemed like a threat. She is also reunited with her brother Josef. The story follows Lisel on her journey after being released from the underground and coping and dealing with the loss of the Goblin King. ![]() ![]() ![]() Shadowsong picks up six months after the ending of Wintersong. I found the pacing was very slow, it only picks up in the last handful of chapters, which for me made it very difficult to stay interested. This was a tolerable follow up, however it wasn't nearly as mesmerizing as the first the novel. It made it difficult to follow along at times. The formatting of my ARC is jumbled and full sentences are displaced and the chapter headings didn’t make sense. I’m not really sure if my concerns with the overall novel began with the ARC. I loved Wintersong and couldn't wait to read the sequel as soon as I was approved on NetGalley I picked it up right away. I was provided an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments The Alchemist by Paolo Bacigalupi![]() ![]() I wanted to know why things ended up they way they did. I didn’t get a real feel for any of them. The world could have been fleshed out more- there were lots of references to other lands, but we only went to a few. Needless to say, it was a good read, but I can’t say that I want to visit the world again. I wish I had more to say about it, but I don’t want to spoil things. Its an interesting approach, and I wasn’t distracted by it, it was simply following the narrative of four different characters within the story, which worked well. ![]() Since there were two authors, I assumed that the story would be told by both of them simultaneously, but each author takes a part and gives it his own spin. The Alchemist, who’s invention to destroy the bramble once and for all, and the rulers who seek to use it for their own personal gain, and three other citizens whose lives are impacted by the events and outcome of part one. This novel is devided into 4 parts, each chronicling the impact this ban on magic has made. It has devastating effects on people if they are pricked by any of the thorns. Cities have fallen to the bramble, so magic itself has been outlawed. This bramble thrives on magic- when you use magic, the bramble increases, becomes more invasive, and eventually it will destroy the land. The Tangled Lands is a world where magic has caused all kinds of problems. ![]() This will be a pretty short review because, well, I don’t have that much to say. ![]() |
